Kwame Canty serves as Managing Director of External Affairs at the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the association that represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies. Since joining EEI’s Political and External Affairs team in 2015 and advancing to Managing Director in 2023, Kwame has played a key role in strengthening relationships between the electric power industry and a broad range of stakeholders.

At EEI, Kwame leads outreach and education efforts with members of Congress, state legislators, mayors, county commissioners, labor & skilled trade, national policy organizations, community-based organizations, and other key stakeholders. Drawing on his extensive experience in government relations, coalition building, and public policy, he helps communicate how the men and women of the electric utility industry work every day to deliver safe, reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean energy to more than 220 million Americans.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Kwame has dedicated his career to public service and public policy. Prior to joining EEI, he served as Director of Programming and Policy for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) under Chairs Marcia L. Fudge and G.K. Butterfield. In that role, he oversaw CBC Member Services, managed the Caucus’s policy task forces, coordinated policy initiatives, and led coalition-building efforts with a wide range of external organizations and advocacy groups.

Kwame also served as Senior Legislative Assistant to Congressman Edolphus Towns, where he was the lead staff member on issues before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. He provided policy analysis, legislative support, and oversight assistance on matters affecting consumers, businesses, and the energy sector.

Kwame currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE), supporting the organization’s mission to ensure the input of African Americans and other underrepresented groups into the discussion and development of energy policies, regulations, and technologies.

He is a graduate of Hampton University and a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
